1. Don't take people with writing advice too seriously.
2. Be interesting from the first sentence to the last.
3. This is a hard business but a worthy one.
4. There aren't any shortcuts.
5. Avoid the MFA-ization of writing as much as possible, even though this will make the path that much harder.
